Here’s what readers are saying about the PETER AND THE MONSTER series!

“I was not sure what to expect by this book so I opened it with an open mind. I was hooked by page 2!...This is a Young Adult book but trust me, adults will enjoy it just as much, maybe even more. Normally I don't read or enjoy YA but I devoured this and want more! Highly recommended.” – SenoraG

“I loved reading this book. It's got everything you could want, lovely, lovely characters, humor, great writing, some dead things that go bump in the night… It's been a long, long while since I've had this much fun reading a novel; I felt like a kid, and I loved every minute of it.” – L.E. Olteano – Butterfly-o-meter Books

“I love that this series isn't just about your typical vampires and werewolves. We've got all kinds of monsters here! It's such a fresh take on the supernatural, told from a totally different perspective.” – KGLawing

“As is the norm in these kind of stories, the mysteries ramp up and the danger gets more nail biting…Creepy for me and thrilling for children.” – Matthew Allen

Excerpt from PETER AND THE SWAMP MONSTER

Rory was about to take another step when something long and dark moved through the water to the right of the dock.

It must’ve been ten feet long, maybe more. It was hard to see; the water was pretty clear, but the sun glinting off the surface didn’t help any. The only detail Rory could make out for sure was a thick tail that tapered to just a few inches wide…

…right before it disappeared under the dock.

Alligator.

Rory looked up to see his friend still seated on the edge of the wooden pier.

With his feet in the water.

“Greg, GET UP!” Rory screamed. “GET OUT OF THE WATER!”

Greg frowned in confusion. “Rory, what – ”

“ALLIGATOR! GET OUT OF THE WATER! UNDER THE DOCK, ALLIGATOR!”

Greg’s eyes went wide. Then he grinned.

“Awwwww, good one, man. This ain’t Florida, there aren’t any gators around here.”

Spit flew out of Rory’s mouth, he was so frantic. “GREG JUST PLEASE GET OUT OF THE WATER, PLEASE GET OUT OF THE WATER PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!”

Greg was obviously confused to see this screaming crazy person who, just a few seconds before, had been his mild-mannered friend. Greg rolled onto his back and lifted his dripping feet high in the air.

“There, are you happy n – ”

CRACK.

The dock between Rory and Greg lifted a foot into the air and buckled in the middle. A dozen boards splintered into jagged pieces before crashing back down.

Between the scraps of shattered wood, Rory caught a glimpse of something before it slipped back into the water.

That wasn’t an alligator.

Alligators were scaly and tough and green. This thing…it was grayish and slick and round. The head, or what he had seen of it, was about the same size as his family’s super-huge big screen TV.

Exactly what the creature was, Rory had no idea. But it was very large, and it was powerful enough to turn a six-foot wide dock into matchsticks.

These are the BEST books ever. Normally in a book series if it goes over 4 I'm done. I just can't hang on any longer. Ya'll, I own 20 something books in this series and LOVE each one of them. They are so well written and the imagination/creativity of this author is just outrageous! I can't believe his stories aren't on everyone's bookshelves. (Or kindles) ;) We homeschool and I have started reading the series out loud to my 11 and 12 year olds this past year. They. Freaking. Love it! If we have to miss out on a couple days due to book club they get super annoyed. We love the adventures and the comedy that comes with following Peter and Dill in all their crazy adventures! We laugh together, we cry together, we all gasp and say "WHAT?!" together...I'm not kidding. This is a wonderful series. I highly recommend anyone out there with imagination and a love for adventure to pick these books up. I enjoyed them (a grown adult) all on my own so even if kids AREN'T involved, READ THEM.

Peter And The Swamp Monster Story #4 Peter And The Monsters edition by Darren Pillsbury Children eBooks Reviews

This, the 4th installment of the series, was more on the scary end of the funny/scary continuum than the the 3rd. The structure and writing are also slightly more sophisticated, though Peter's best friend Dill continues to provide comic relief (perhaps too much so, as it's starting to wear out its welcome a little bit).

The addition of new characters, mostly authority figures like the town police, is welcome, and also helps to add weight to Peter and Dill's situation, as well as some realistic and sad background info regarding Dill's delinquency.

The swamp monster itself is pretty terrifying, especially for a children's book. Kids who like scary stuff will be pleased! The little bit of Native American folklore/mythology thrown in was also pretty
well done, and not exploitative.

I wish there were more female characters, though, which I've noticed is an ongoing problem in the series so far. Since Pillsbury used this installment to start adding new secondary and side characters to populate the town of Duskerville and its environs, why couldn't a few of them be girls? I hope this course is corrected in future installments.
